Marion Island was first discovered in 1663 by the Dutch ship Maerseveen. The discovery was accidental, and they made no landing on the island. After about five years Captain Cook also saw the islands, but he couldn’t make a landing due to bad weather. The 67 th Relief Expedition to Marion Island arrived on the island on the 15 April 2010 aboard the SA Agulhas. Amongst the relief group is Pierre Tromp ZS1HF a adventurist, radio amateur and SAWDIS weather observer. (I can add many more interests but the article will then be to long) Pierre will be responsible for all radio communications on and from the island alias his occupation for the next year will be know as radio technician.

0130 UTC and expect to be on the ground in ZL7 around 0400 UTC. The
schedule is as variable as Air Chatham is. Work will begin on assembling
the antennas Thursday night in the dark. We will do as much preliminary
work and preparation as we can before Friday morning.
